La grande ourse terrasse

"Fautrier" painting details
|
The thirties were the pioneer years for the skiing in Val d’Isère.
In 1936 the town created the first ski lift, the first ski school, and inaugurated the road going from Bourg St Maurice through the Iseran Pass.
"La Grande Ourse" was built in 1937;
In this period the french painter Fautrier lived in Tignes, and he painted the fresco in the dining room, which qualified the chalet as a listed monument.
After the war "La Grande Ourse" quickly became the address for partying.
A bar made of snow and ice on the terrace, serving "Vin Chaud" and other comforting drinks for starters, followed by dansing inside, often rather " ‘hot".
Top musicians from the period came to play, and records have been made on location !
From 1967 until recently, Anne Marie and André took over "La Grande Ourse" as well as it’s long tradition of welcoming skiers and guests in need of comfort.
Today Lise and Jean follow their trace , the atmosphere hasn’t changed and you continue to feel welcome and at home at "La Grande Ourse".
